How to do a Well-Being Reset for the New Year..
I know usually when we talk about the New Year we can get very ‘New Year New Me’ vibes. While I always support and encourage personal growth and development I want to start this post by saying this…
Right now, in this moment, before you have made a single change, before you have started a single new habit. You are enough. You are enough and your worth as a human being does not become more or less when you make changes. Because you are fully worthy just as you are right now, and in every moment that has been and will be.
Worthy of cherishing, or love, or self care, of healthy relationships, or success, of good health and everything else good in this world.
Ok just had to say that.
So as with everything we teach and coach here at Nourish & Wild, I always encourage approaching a Well-Being Reset from a place of freedom and joy. What does that mean?
Rather than imposing rigid rules on ourselves, or telling ourselves we have to cut things out or stop doing this or that- we instead focus what are called approach focus goals (rather than avoidant goals e.g I am going to stop eating sugar). Things we can start doing that help nourish our bodies and minds. Things we want to work towards, not away from.
When we think about wellness or taking are of our well-being we can start to think of things like yoga, breathwork, journalling…all very valid things that can support our emotional and physical health. But I would encourage you, as I do all my clients, to think outside the box. What else do you do that lights you up? That brings you joy? What do you know warms your heart and lifts your spirits that you do, but just don’t do often enough (or maybe haven’t done in a long time?). I’ll give you an example. For me it’s singing. Perhaps for you it’s crafting, reading, meeting your friends for a coffee and morning stroll, scrap booking, knitting, gardening….the list is endless but there are no rules! Think creatively. Wellness isn’t all cold plunges and meditation.
Before you make any changes reflect on what you really, truly value in life. What do you actually care about? I’ll give you an example. I used to go the gym 5 times a week. I was a personal trainer. I felt like I should. But my brain LOVES variety and hates routine. I also love being outside and being active in rhe great outdoors. The gym 5 times a week? Meant less time for other things I valued. So instead I go 3 times a week and once or twice to pilates. Then I get movement in through hiking, kayaking and outdoor swims. For me this balance is WAY better because it aligns with what I actually care about. Which is not being in a blimming gym day after day after day. So check in, do I really want this? What is a version of this that allows me to meet my goals without giving up what I really value and care about in life?
As you start thinking about the new year and how you want it to feel- check in with these questions first so you can approach your reset from a more joyful, freeing and aligned place.
