The Magical Powers of Weekly Rest
Gosh don't the weekends just whizz by in a blur!
You get to Sunday evening you're like..."wait....hold on...did I just blink and two days have gone by? And I don't feel any more refreshed than I did at the end of last week”.
I want to show you how you can turn your weekends into a super recharging time...
By making time for intentional rest.
Not sitting in front of netflix and binging a tv series (nothing wrong with that! Just not the kinda rest we are talking about here).
But deep, nourishing rest that moves you out of the stress response (your sympathetic fight or flight) nervous system and into the restorative part of your nervous system (parasympathetic rest and digest).
Now before we dive in to what that looks like I want to be really clear on something.
Life is for living. Weekends don't have to be (and I would argue shouldn't be- unless that's what you really truly want) all about down time.
You want to get to Friday and actually have the energy to go do things. To live life. Not to just crash out and try claw back some energy before Monday.
So your deep rest doesn't need to take hours and hours. But it does need to be...
🌿 Intentional- meaning you need to actually plan it in not just hope it will happen.
🌿 Moves you into your parasympathetic (rest & digest) response- so you are deeply resting not just doom scrolling on your phone sitting on the sofa.
So what does weekly deep rest look like?
As with all things health & wellness- it is going to be unique to you! What helps me find deep rest and calm might look very different to you. And that’s ok!
The main thing to think about is making sure it is physical and mental rest. We often forget that last part. We think sitting and chilling is rest, and in some ways it absolutely is! But it isn’t DEEP rest, that really fills our cup and recharges our energy. Our minds need to be resting. Not still having to ‘do’ or ‘process’ things.
Weekly deep rest might look like…
A walk in nature without your phone (or with your phone out of sight as I appreciate for safety having it to hand isn't a bad thing)
A yoga nidra session (online or in person class- I personally love Ally Boothroyd on Youtube!)
20minutes breathwork
A long relaxing stretching session
Reading with no distractions
A craft session (no phones allowed!)
Whatever deeply nourishing and relaxes you there is no right or wrong here!
Let’s turn this into action…
This weekend plan a specific time and day you will take some time out for deep rest. Pick what activity it will be, choose a relaxing playlist in advance if that would help. Make it super easy to do so you don't have to figure anything out when you get too it.
Specific time and day is key here. Just saying “at some point over the weekend I will do a yoga nidra session’ will likely result in it suddenly being Sunday eve and you haven’t done it. So judgement, it’s true for all of us, lack of a plan doesn’t give us the right environment to make change happen. It’s too vague. Our brain needs specificity. What will you do, when will you do it (day and time), do you need to plan or get anything ready ahead of time? E.g pick your online class so you’re not deciding and scrolling through options during your rest time.
